HABIT CHANGES TO BEAT ADDICTION

The Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a twelve-step sobriety programme that was founded in 1935 might appear to be based entirely on a belief in a higher power, but it is essentially a programme of habit change. The introspection that the members are encouraged to engage in, by taking stock of their lives, helps them to identify the cues that lead them to the drinking habit, as well as the rewards it gave them. Typically, the trigger is a feeling of stress, a need to vent after a hard day’s work or a desire to meet people and socialise. Therefore, the reward is a feeling of relaxation and connection with people. Members undergoing the AA programme, once they become aware of what drives them to drink and what they seek after drinking, are taught to change the routine in the habit loop—instead of hitting the bottle, they call their sponsor or go to a meeting. These interactions allow them the space to vent and find social connections, the very reward that they had sought through heavy drinking. So the change is born, first, out of an awareness of what triggers and rewards the habitual behaviour, and second, from a willingness to change.

AA was a pioneer in many respects, conclusively demonstrating that through the right awareness and a group support system, even the most deeply rooted habits that become addictions could be broken, one step at a time.
